Jay Phelps ‘Broken Standards’ Description

Canadian-born, London-based trumpeter and composer Jay Phelps is excited to share the music from his upcoming EP series ‘Broken Standards’ out on Phelps’ own label SoulEndvr Records. His latest single is ‘I’ve Got A Crush On You’ produced by himself and Broken Beat maestro Cengiz, featuring vocalist Mhari Aurora.

In this upbeat and energetic track, Phelps has rearranged the Gershwin classic and given it an exciting new spin, made for the clubs and Jazz venues alike. Drawing inspiration from Broken Beat producers such as IG Culture or Mark De Clive Lowe, as well as the current London jazz scene, ‘Broken Standards’ takes the Jazz classic and flips it on its head with an All-Star lineup.
Phelps has been producing and influencing ground-breaking jazz since his time at university, when he founded and co-lead the extraordinary Jazz sensation Empirical, widely understood to have been a major force in the rebirth of the young British jazz scene. Since then, he has played with some of the greatest names in music, from Courtney Pine, Wynton Marsalis to Amy Winehouse.
London-based, Phelps has developed an on-going love affair with the city’s evolving scenes and genres, as reflected in his exploration of Broken Beat and electronic music across the EP series.
Now a radio presenter on WWFM, forming relationships with other DJ’s has informed Phelps’ desire to approach classic tracks with a new, refreshing angle. This new series remains grounded in Phelps’ extensive training and experience, but branches out to reframe Jazz classics.
“As I’ve been a silent fan of the Broken Beat scene here in the UK for some time, my aim was to rearrange a hand full of Jazz standards that I love with inspiration from the rhythms and grooves of Broken Beat” says Phelps.
This was the inspiration behind the EP title 'Broken Standards' Reflecting not only on a new interpretation of Jazz standards, but also the plummeting or archaic global standards. 2020's lockdown has resulted in this project being Phelps’ first virtually recorded EP; a process he claims has taught him to incorporate “many different elements, not just my own voice” and thus has enabled the playful experimentation that is evident in this first track.

Phelps’ second single is Wayne Shorter’s ‘Fall’, releasing May 19th with ‘Broken Standards’ VOL 1. Out July 16th.

We turned on to Emma Jean at Monterey Jazz Fest, and she's the reason I went from 'ehhh I'm not sure I like Acid Jazz and I sure as hell don't like fusion" to "what the hell is *this awesome galactic brilliance?!* A rare talent and a damn fine slab of wax that I have on heavy rotation. I love many tracks including 'Spectre', and i wonder to myself how much it owes to Kate Bush's spectral "Watching You Without Me." jaxers
